You'll often see a bit of fundraising advice that goes like this: Focus on retaining more of your existing donors and you won't have to invest so much in acquiring new donors. What this advice ignores is that increasing donor retention rates can be harder and sometimes more expensive than acquiring new donors.
Retention rates reflect a myriad factors, including the make-up of your acquisition universe, the timing and frequency of your renewal program, the strength of your appeals, and the efficiency and warmth of your acknowledgments.
