Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) and shared services have the potential
of reducing costs and increasing efficiency among organizations. The BPO
conference and exhibition for NGOs and development partners forum was
organised in Kampala, Uganda by the Ministry of Information and
Communications Technology. The event brought together representatives of
NGOs and development agencies, as well as BPO service providers.
BPO is a form of outsourcing that involves the contracting of the operations
and responsibilities of a specific business functions (or processes) to a
third-party service provider. BPO that is contracted outside a company's
country is called offshore outsourcing. BPO that is contracted to a
company's neighboring (or nearby) country is called nearshore outsourcing.
Given the proximity of BPO to the information technology industry, it is
also categorized as an information technology enabled service or ITES.
 Speaking
at the opening ceremony of the conference Honorable Minister of Information
and communications technology Aggrey Siryoyi Awori said that the Ugandan
government does recognize the potential ICT as a catalyst for
social-economic development and has taken steps to strengthen its ICT
industry and develop a digitally enabled economy. These steps will generate
economic growth and prosperity, and propel Uganda into the knowledge
economy.
