Meeting Computer Requirements

6 January 2009

Accra-The world increasingly has become a global village, as a result
of the impact of Information Technology (IT) and Science development,
indicative of the fact that truly we are in an information age.

Ghana cannot afford to be left behind in this great endeavor as most
economies of the world are shifting from depending on traditional
sources of income towards intellectual resources.Blessed with abundant
natural and human resources, we have dwelt for far two long on the
former and its time for the nation to begin to explore the later to
its maximum potential.

Countries like India and a few other Asian countries have advanced
from a third world status, to a new and a better status as a result of
its strong role in the IT sector, especially software development.

Today, the country does not only have enough to meet its IT manpower
needs, but earns handsomely through the export of its software. The
pool of capable IT manpower in the country has equally become a strong
attraction for entrepreneurs from other countries, thereby attracting
Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) into the country.

The World Relishes ITU's New Global Standard for Fully Networked Home

22 December 2008

Lagos- Mobile and telecommunications industry may be heading for high
rise in revolutionary technology breakthrough, as the International
Telecommunications Union, ITU, rose from its meeting last week to
adopt the first global standard for offering in-home, high-speed
network, capable of delivering room-to-room HDTV. The standard,
published under the G.hn banner, promises high quality multimedia over
power, coaxial, phone and other home network wiring. It will give up
to 20 times the through put of existing wireless technologies and
three times that of existing wired technologies.

The specifications will be used by chip manufacturers to build
transceivers that can be incorporated into set-top boxes, residential
gateways, home computers, home audio systems, DVD players, TVs or any
other device that might be connected to a network now or in the
future. Experts say that silicon companies will immediately start
incorporating the specifications into transceivers, implying that
G.hn-compliant products could be on the market as early as 2010.

2008: Boom year for hi-tech criminals

31 December 2008

If 2007 witnessed the rise of the professional hi-tech criminal, then
2008 should be regarded the year they got down to work.
"The underground economy is flourishing," said Dan Hubbard, chief
technology officer at security company Websense.
"They are not just more organised," said Mr Hubbard, "they are
cooperating more and showing more business savvy in how they monetize
what they do." he added.

Statistics gathered by firms combating the rising tide of computer
crime reveal just how busy professional Cyber thieves have been over
the last twelve months.

Sophos said it was now seeing more than 20,000 new malicious programs
every day. 2008 was also the year in which Symantec revealed that its
antivirus software now protected against more than one million
viruses.
