*The grid maps out 11,000 HIV support centres across South Africa*

Vodacom's the Grid, South Africa's first location-based mobile social
network available to everyone who has a WAP-enabled cell phone, has mapped
out close to 11,000 HIV-related support services covering prevention,
treatment and support across South Africa. By utilizing the Grid's
location-aware technology, South Africans are not only able to see on their
cell phones which HIV support service is closest to them, but they can also
obtain the centre's contact details and get directions to it.

People in the West throw away millions of old computers every year. Hundreds
of thousands of them end up in Africa, where children try to eke out a
living by selling the scrap. But the toxic elements in the waste are slowly
poisoning them. The United Nations estimates that up to 50 million tons of
electronic waste are thrown away globally each year. It costs about €3.50
($5.30) to properly dispose of an old CRT monitor in Germany.

*Samsung’s ICT training plan places 185 into employment*

An initiative by a mobile phone manufacturer, Samsung, and three
non-governmental organisations to train youth from poor backgrounds in
Nairobi in ICT and entrepreneurship is beginning to bear fruits. While some
have landed employment other enterprising ones have opened businesses. Out
of the 746 youths that the three local NGOs — Africa Centre for Women
Information and Communication Technology, and Informal Sector Business
Institute — have trained, 185 have either been linked to employers or have
opened their own shops.
