Dear Members,
telecentre.org, a global community of people committed for improving the capacity and sustainability of community telecentres around the world, had announced a telecentre.org academy Curriculum Commons Grant of Rs 50 lakh (USD 125,000) for improving the quality and standard of grassroots knowledge workers, commonly referred to as telecentre managers.
The grant was announced last month at the inaugural address of the eINDIA 2008 conference by D Purandeswari, Minister of State for Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.
Announcing the first set of winners today, Dr Basheerhamad Shadrach, the Lead Program Officer for telecentre.org academy initiative mentioned that the grant announcement made by the Honorable Minister D Purandeswari in July was well received by telecentre organizations across the world. More than 30 proposals from four continents were shortlisted for final selection by an expert committee. The expert committee members included Ms Karishma Kiri of Microsoft, Ms Maria Teresa Camba of Commission on ICT, the Philippines, Mr Kiringai Kamau of VACID Africa and Dr Basheerhamad Shadrach of telecentre.org.
The following thirteen organizations have been chosen to receive 15 awards in all:
1. 4C, Hungary (Current training modules - and converting the existing material into interactive and self-learning curriculum)
2. Asian Institute Of Journalism And Communication, The Philippines (Knowledge Management (KM) for Community Development)
3. Center for Communication Development and Knowledge management (CCDKM): Thai Telecentre.org, Thailiand (Academy Curriculum Development)
4. Centro de Informatica da Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (CIUEM), Mozambique (Basic Preventive And Curative Maintenance Techniques For Community Ict Activists)
5. Comet Media Foundation, India (Curriculum Development on Science & information technology, Visual communication & design, Social perspectives and Entrepreneurship)
6. Datamation Foundation, India (Re-packaging and converting the existing material into interactive and self-learning curriculum)
7. Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Moratuwa, Moratuwa, Sri Lanka (Joomla Training Material in the Sinhala Language)
8. Egypt ICT Trust Fund, Egypt (Building management capacity, enhance skills and produce state0of-the-art content for telecenters' management)
9. Faculty of Information and Communication Studies (FICS) & University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), the Philippines (Training of Trainers on ICT-Based Extension Management and Delivery)
10. Friday Solutions Private Limited, India (Entrepreneurship for grassroots; legal literacy for rural population; Leveraging the Internet for employment)
11. Humaclin Healthcare Private Limited & SATHI, India (Telemedicine services in telecentres)
12. Information Technology Agency of Sri Lanka and University of Colombo School of Computing, Sri Lanka (Creating computer awareness together with skills in Mathematics and English)
13. Rural Development Institute, India (Conversion of the Curriculum Kit into interactive multimedia content in the form of text and sound)
