Forty-three Rwandan companies have been nominated to compete for Rwanda Information Technology Authority (RITA) first ever Intego ICT awards. Two Telecentres appear on the list of nominees: Nyamata Tele-service Centre in the categories of bridging the digital divide and Maraba Telecentre in e-agriculture category.
Mr. Nkubito Bakuramutsa, Director General RITA made the announcement today during a press conference that marked the start of a landmark event for the ICT sector in Rwanda.
According to Bakuramutsa, the first awards, will primarily be used among other purposes to promote ICT entrepreneurship, motivate Rwandan companies to produce exportable ICT products and to serve rural and underserved areas.
“We want to use the awards to reward institutions and individuals that have excelled in adopting best ICT practices and to showcase achievements by Rwandan institutions and individuals in the area of ICT,” said Bakuramutsa.
The Intego ICT Awards, which are in line with the National Information and Communication Infrastructure Plan, (NICI), will take place 31st October, 2008 at the Kigali Serena Hotel under the theme “Achievements of Rwandan firms in the area of Information and Communication Technology”.
They will provide an ideal opportunity for Rwandan ICT companies, public, policy makers, technocrats, institutions of higher learning and civil society to celebrate the progress achieved in the ICT field.
This Bakuramutsa says will create a clear path for the way forward to ensure Rwanda’s vision of transforming the economy into an information-rich, knowledge-based ICT economy is fulfilled.
“It is important to note that one of the best ways to encourage excellence and innovation is to recognize every single step that is taken in the right direction.
Undeniably, RITA’s motivation at this stage is not to use the awards to reward excellence per se but rather to instil the best ICT practices, recognize and encourage those who have made significant strides in Rwanda’s ICT for Development Vision.”
Voting for the nominees will commence Monday 13 October, 2008 and will constitute votes from a panel of judges and the public. The public popular vote will constitute 30 percent and the panel of judges’ vote 70 percent.

Meddie and all,
This event helped reach out to more people and we used it as a platform to sell
out all our services so that the community would in the end use them for their
benefit and the centre.
It also helped the station boost its listenership as we registered about 600
more new members to the Radio Fans' Club, adding to the present 300 who were
already members in this club.
Also, some revenue was raised, though most of it was spent on organising this
event.
Thanks

> Thanks for the info. Great to know that the telecentre can pull together
such an important group of guests to its events. This points to the influence
it
has in the community.
>
> Can you tell us a little more how the telecentre used the event to
strengthen its activities - say by way of mobilising additional resources,
partners or reaching out to new users/parts of the community.
