Nakaseke Telecentre began operation on March 5, 1999 through a
partnership between the Uganda National Commission for UNESCO, the
Uganda Public Libraries Board in Kampala and the Uganda Telecom
Limited. Initial sources of funding were UNESCO, IDRC, ITU and the
Government of Uganda. The community provided the Telecenter's initial
facility, which was originally a community center. Construction of a
new, permanent Telecentre was made possible through funds from local
taxes. The Telecentre is located in the center of the town of
Nakaseke, adjacent to the local administration building and is
equipped to offer telephone and fax services, photocopying, videos
(video/digital camera and video projector), computer services and
training as well as Internet access. It also houses a library
(resource) center equipped with informational materials donated by the
Public Libraries Board, Book Aid International and other partners.

Nakaseke, which is 64 kilometers north of the Ugandan capital Kampala,
serves not only the local people, but also the 24 neighboring primary
schools, four secondary schools, a primary teacher's college and the
nearby hospital.

Nakaseke Community Multimedia Center CMC is one among the six
Community Radios piloted by UNESCO in Uganda. Others include, Apac in
the North, Kagadi in the South Eastern, Kachwekano-Kabale in the west,
Buwama, Nabweru and Nakaseke in the Central region. Broadcasting on
102.9 FM the station seeks to is disseminate information related to
community information needs such as Agriculture, marketing, Health,
Education, Gender issues, Traditional Knowledge, HIV/AIDS and other
current affairs issues.

The celebrations were held on Saturday 11th October 2008; at the
telecentre grounds just in front of the telecentre building and a
number of guests as well as local community members were invited. The
guest of honor was the area MP, Rose Mayanja. The celebrations which
lasted the whole day started with a cycling competition where the top
three were to be feted with prizes later on. The telecentre grounds
were sealed off and music systems, a platform, tents and chairs put up
in readiness for the visitors. By midday the master of Ceremonies had
taken his place on the platform where he invited a number of speakers,
musicians and other performers.

The Guest of Honor, Mrs. Mayanja was finally invited to give her
speech then present prizes to the winners of the cycling competition.
She was the taken round the telecentre building, where she visited the
main offices, the training hall, radio station and the library.

Being one of the first Telecentres in Uganda, Nakaseke Telecentre is
at the forefront in championing that indeed a telecentre can be
innovative, sustainable while retaining it relevance to its community.

Congratulations to Peter Balaba- the telecentre manager, all staff of
Nakaseke telecentre and partners who have enabled this telecentre
achieve this milestone.
