You are right and I do understand also.
May be to help up friends; have the following suggestions:
 
(1) Your email account password should not be used when signing-up on new networks. What some of the people online intend to do is to capture your password and email and then they can enter into your email account. One of my friends experienced the same and a fool had to send a contradicting message to all her friends.
 
(2) Have a password you use while signing up on such junk, junk social net works. This helps in this way, they will have your email address right but they wont have your password for your email account. Some time back I realised that some fools were accessing my account but God bless, had to change all my passwords before they actually changed my original one. From that day on, they are sending me invitations to join soooooo many networks and where I wish I just use my password for such and when they use it to access my account it does not work.
 
(3) If possible, never respond to such invitations sent to you of a person you dont know.
 
Very may suggestions but those 3 are very important. Have different passwords for various accounts.

Let me share with you a similar experience ...

My sister received a similar mail from one of her friends also claiming
that she was stuck in Nigeria and urgently needed money, etc etc. She was
about to respond to the email but out of curiosity, decided to call her
Uganda number to see whether she had left her mobile phone with someone
sothat she could let them know of the "calamity" that had befallen
the
friend. To her surprise, the very friend answered and told her that she
had never even been to Nigeria ...

At the end of the day, she realised that this hacker had accessed her
email address and read through her mails and so picked someone who travels
and one that she communicates to alot. The hacker followed the lead to her
email address and so was sending emails from her address directly to my
sister ...

So this sounds familiar to yours i guess. What you do is maybe try
changing your password i dont know ....
