I would like to point people at two important foundations of any information
service run from a telecentre:
*1) Maps:* A map is an invaluable resource to your community as well as
visitors. Open Street Map (http://www.openstreetmap.org) offers a system for
creating copy-right free maps of your local area from cheap, hand held GPS
trackers and/or Yahoo aerial photographs. You can print the map
*2) Local Yellow Pages:* using a system like Yellowikis (
http://yellowikis.wikia.org) you can start to collect a list of all the
businesses and organizations in your area - collecting this information
gives the perfect reason to contact the business leaders in your community
and start a conversation about how your telecentre can help service their
information needs.
Let me know if you want help or advice on how best to get started with these
services.
