The term Information and Communication Technology (ICT) stems from the convergence of telecommunication, computing and broadcasting through the use of digital information. Any product that will receive, store, retrieve, manipulate and transmit information electronically in a digital form is included.. There is much talk of the ‘Digital Revolution’ and it is true that digital technology surrounds us in our daily lives and is set to increase its influence.
Education:
Digital technology’s influence starts from youth. Almost all schools in Europe are now equipped with internet connection. It is an invaluable resource for research and information. Volumes of educational material can also be bought on DVD or CD. This advantage stretches up the educational ladder; it is at least as useful for those at the highest levels in universities or those who are engaged in distance learning. The cost of information has been greatly reduced for those who have access to the web, and it is common for access to be free in many local libraries across Europe.
Health:
Technological advances continue a pace in health care; current research is looking into biosensors which can be built into 'smart clothes' and implants. These will help patients and their doctors monitor and manage health status. It is not just about the future. Sophisticated equipment such as MRI scanners utilise digital technologies and the efficiency and accuracy of transmitting health data is reliant on these technologies. Health information has become one of the most popular search terms on the internet. The wealth of information has empowered ordinary lay people and given them a complementary source of knowledge about conditions and their treatment to that of doctors and pharmacists.
Security:
Digital technology enhances both safety and security. Its effect ranges from fire safety – radio frequency identification devices are a key component of fire alarms – to home and business security, for example via security cameras
Politics:
In the political sphere, it enables the mobilisation of political resources and citizens to engage directly and swiftly with government. eDemocracy has become a much touted term and covers everything from the information available on public institutions’ websites to the flirtation by governments with text voting for elections.
Entertainment:
Digital technology also influences the lighter side of life. Products and services that stimulate our senses, musical, audiovisual and interactive, are increasingly digital.
Communication:
Finally, perhaps one of the most significant revolutions has been of communication. Just fifteen years ago the vast majority of the world’s population did not have email or mobile ‘phones. Now, almost two billion people have taken advantage of the ability to talk to other people anytime, anywhere with mobiles. Email has made it affordable to contact loved ones wherever they are in the world and has become a valuable and necessary tool in the workplace. For those who are housebound, it can be a line to the outside world.
