Hello all,

This is Jean Paul, attending the Internet Governance Forum in Hyderabad (
India). The General theme is : REACHING THE NEXT BILLION ( Internet
users).
There are then many sessions taking place here. For reaching the next
billion, I think that Telecenters have to play a big role. I even saw a
booth of TELECENTRE MAGAZINE in the village exhibition.
I wanted to react to that e.mail as I have attended yesterday a workshop
dedicated to Open source and open standards.
Many panellist involved in open source software development have told
about their story.
One question raised from the audience : What would we recommend to
telecenter managers and cyber cafés managers ?
The response was that : for better security and maintenance, open source
software are recommended. The problem is that proprietary softwares have
an additional cost. And, when we relay on proprietary software, we tend to
use pirated copies, that don't access to security updates download.

Sincerely.
