Subject: [UgaBYTES] ICT Infrastructures for Rural Areas in Africa

 

Hullo friends,

The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) in
partnership with Kenya's ministry of information is organizing a workshop
that aims at assisting developing countries in elaborating their ICT
strategy and infrastructures in rural areas. 
The event will be held from 29-30 November 2007 in Nairobi, Kenya. It is
mainly targeting selected LDCs in Eastern Africa including Malawi, Uganda
and Ethiopia.

The objectives of the workshop include:
. To provide training and disseminate information on the RIPA methodology; 
. To discuss and identify areas where ICS can assist interested African
countries in evaluating and implementing tele-centre programmes using the
RIPA methodology;
. To advise local stakeholders on the critical issues regarding the
establishing of telecentres in rural areas and provide them with decision
support tools; 
. To provide expert advice on issues relating to the establishment of
telecentres in rural communities.
. To examine alternative sources of energy (preferably renewable) to power
the potential tele-centres to be created. 
. Establishing the type of educational content that could be provided to
improve the education of the rural communities' members.

Expected outputs
. Around 30 persons trained and information provided on the RIPA
methodology; 
. Rural areas identified for possible Telecentre set-up;
. Portfolio of possible Telecentre projects to be included in the 2008 High
Technology and New Materials Area work programme.
