The recently concluded e conference on sustainability of telecentres, highlihted the mission of the telecentres in the developing world. I took part in it , writing not so much from the experiential point of view, but as an educator who feels that the concept is applicable to those who believe in technology mediated instruction, and are an advocacy of such a cause. And I learnt a lot from the discussions, taking place among people who have had vast experience in this field at the grass root leve. I work in the Indira Gandhi National Open University New Delhi, our university is of late tying up with organisations such as MSSRF which are part of the telecentre movement in India.
However our university has also taken upon the onerous task of integrating mainstream education with vocational education, and is also espousing the cause of digital literacy. In fact we have tele learning centres in many of our regional centres, which impart apart from professional computer programmes, computer literacy programmes. In future I am sure that these computer labs can integrate vocational training with digital literacy especially in rural areas. This is a suggestion I would like to make to my university. This is especially so after my recent participation in this e conference, which has been an eye opener and revelation of sorts to me.Thanks indeed to ugabytes!
