Allow me share with you some interesting news from Tanzania.
The telecentre movement in the East Africa region is steadily gaining momentum.
The Tanzania Telecentre Network was launched at a meeting on 25 -27 October 2007 in Mwanza, Tanzania. Over 27 participants most from
telecentres attended the meeting. The workshop was supported by the International Institute for Communication and Development, SwopNet and
UgaBYTES.

Hirnoy Barmeda was elected chairperson of the budding network with Sengerema Telecentre's Felician Ncheye as his vice.

The network envisions a democratic, knowledgeable and prosperous society. Its mission is to create an environment that enables strong, efficient,
effective and sustainable telecentres in Tanzania which will eventually contribute towards a knowledgeable, skilled and just society.

Among the challenges faced by the telecentre movement in Tanzania include: unfavourable legal, fiscal and policies environment in the promotion of
telecentres; lack of knowledge sharing platforms and the methodology to preserve the local content; lack of managerial, financial and
technological and fundraising skills in telecentre management and lack of support and awareness from political and government leaders.

To address the above challenges, the network aims to:
• Conduct dialogue with government leaders on the importance of having
conducive, legal and non – legal regimes for the promotion of Telecentres
• Establish platforms for local and modern knowledge sharing and management.
• Develop capacity of managerial, financial, technical and fundraising
skills to telecentres
• Create ICT4D awareness to politicians, government officials and the
general public.

As a way forward, SWOPnet Forum Mwanza Chapter was elected to act as an
intermediate organization for 3 years, with the aim of supporting the
young network.
