School based computer labs will be very good models for telecentres.Similarly with the community information centres that I have talked about.

The UgaBYTES initiatives technical was recently in Ndejje Senior Secondary
School .The school is about forty five minutes drive away from the city
Kampala. It is a School Based Telecentre (SBT) and enjoys a very healthy
relationship with UgaBYTES Initiatives.
The mission of this latest visit was to lay network cables in a room that
will soon be the Computer Lab for teachers of the school. Through our
estimations the (approximately 7 by 6 meter) room would fit about 15
computers. This was reached at after considering factors like space
available, the number of teachers meant to use the lab and the number of
furniture available for use in the lab .Other factors included the views
of the lab administrator and Technical considerations.
Prior to this visit there was an earlier one where the Technical team
members involved -Mahmood Ddamulira and Francis Mwathi- had made an
earlier one to see and take measurements of the room . Also UgaBYTES
Initiatives was involved in the purchase of materials like Network Cables,
24-port Switch, Trunkings and RJ-45s.
Ndejje Senior Secondary School has some of the best educational facilities
in Uganda. Recently they received computers through a Ministry of
Education grant and now boast of an ultra modern computer lab. The school
now has more than 70 computers more than half of which are now connected
to the internet.
Currently they are having a plan to put up a computer lab for teachers.
This will among other reasons help them peruse the diverse database
structure of the internet for their research and consequently arm them
with enough knowledge to impart on the young minds the handle daily.
UgaBYTES have, is and will always be there to help in such ventures and so
when they came calling for our assistance we were only too willing to
help.
The two technicians were therefore dispatched to the school to embark on
the mission. The work was projected to take one day but circumstances
beyond our control really derailed our activities. One was an acute
shortage of power that would pop its head at the most crucial of times.
There was a lot of drilling involved plus testing of the network cables
that meant electricity had to be present. Another setback was the switch
that was initially meant to link the computers in this Lab was faulty and
had to be returned back to the supplier in Kampala for exchange. All these
therefore stretched the operation to three days. By the last day the
cables had been laid including one that brought internet into the room
from the main server and trunking done. What remained was bringing in the
furniture and the computers.
When it was all said and done the technicians could sit back happy that
another mission had ended successfully. The staff at Ndejje S.S.S were
very happy at the job done. A follow up journey is on the cards to go
check if the Lab is functioning optimally once the computers and other
accessories are brought in.
