* eIndia 2007 conference: building new communities
Built on the success of the last three years, the eIndia2007 Conference
saw an overwhelming participation from the ICT4D community representing
policy-makers, implementers, grassroots practitioners, managers,
researchers, entrepreneurs and social investors from government, civil
society and the private sector. The Conference closed with more than 1200
participants attending the seven inter-related conferences namely eGov,
Digital Learning, Telecentre Forum, eHealth, mServe,Community Radio and
e-Agriculture.

her children through school.
As she browses the Internet at the Nabweru Community Multimedia Centre
(CMC) computer lab, Lovincer Nabanja recounts how the facility has enabled
her to acquire computer and business skills leading to better management
of her restaurant.

* From Information Village Research Project to Mission 2007 to Grameen
Gyan Abhiyan
The curtains drawn at the close of the fourth convention of Mission 2007
on 3rd August 2007 heralded a new beginning for this movement that aims to
transform every Indian village into a knowledge centre. And why only
Indian villages- every rural community in the world! All successful
‘movements’ have a ripple effect and so was the case with Mission 2007. It
led to the emergence of Mission Swabhiman in Nepal, Mission 2011 in
Bangladesh and became a role model for several other countries in the
South Asian region. The coming years will see many more such replications.

* Telecentres get Internet
Communication has been made easy after the Community Wireless Resource
Centre (CWRC) simultaneously implemented wireless networks at Nabweru and
Lira telecenters in Uganda last week. The wireless service infrastructure
that will be shared and managed by the community was launched on August 3
2007. It is aimed at reducing the high cost of Internet connectivity.

CWRC Launches Community Wireless Networks in two telecentres

* Rural Innovation Fund award winners announced at Mission 2007
Microsoft India and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC)
announced the names of the rural entrepreneurs who will receive funding
under the Rural Innovation Fund to a tune of Rs 8 million. The fund is a
collaborative effort between Microsoft and IDRC. It is managed by a
committee set up under Mission 2007, comprising of eminent people from the
industry, academia and government.

* e-Championing Sri Lanka’s e-Government
e-Champions is an innovative programme created to equip a core group of
thirty Chief Innovation Officers (CIO) with the knowledge and skills
necessary to drive the implementation of an effective e-government in Sri
Lanka. This key initiative is being undertaken by the Information and
Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA), in a strategic
partnership with the World Bank Institute (WBI), Global Development
Learning Network (GDLN), and the Distance Learning Centre (DLC) in Sri
Lanka.

* Official launching of Nyamata Telecentre slated for August 17
Nyamata Telecentre service (NTS) was established in 2004. It is located in
Bugesera district about 30 minutes drive from Kigali. Nyamata telecentre
will be officially launched on 17th August 2007 at Nyamata.
