perspective in planning, designing, and evaluating projects with an ICT
(Information and Communication Technology) component, including
telecentres.
IDRC, including telecentre.org, is presently supporting the "GEM 2"
project which incorporates research that can help to determine the best
way of adapting GEM in the context of the following ICT for development
themes: ICT policy, localization, telecentres, and ICT for rural

* 'Find, Use, Share & Expand'-Rufina Fernandes, CEO, NASSCOM Foundation

Rumi Mallick got an oppurtunity to catch up with Rufina Fernandes, CEO,
NASSCOM Foundation, India for a brief interveiw. As CEO of NASSCOM
Foundation Rufina's role is to give direction to this initiative, evolve
a
transparent mechanism to monitor the progress and motivate stakeholders

network is to use digital technologies to reduce isolation, bridge the
digital divide, promote health and hygiene related awareness, create
economic opportunities, and reach out to the youth in these communities

* India sponsors rural telecentres in Sri Lanka
The problems posed by domestic strife has not distracted Sri Lankans
from
trying to bridge their own 'digital divide' - and opening up the more
communication-challenged districts of the island-state to the advantages
of the Internet. Their goal of creating over 1,000 'Nenasalas' - rural
knowledge centres, all equipped with Internet-enabled computers - by
2008,
received a minor boost recently when the Indian Government pitched in
with
a Rs.6-million package to sponsor 20 of these telecentres "carefully
selected to ensure maximum coverage."
