The post-secondary education she acquired has not prevented her from doing
what many university graduates despise. She is deep in the village assisting
residents to improve their living conditions through rearing chicken,
cultivating and constructing toilets.

Yet that is just a tip of the iceberg of the job done by Josephine Bizaaala
under the Kamuli Integrated Development Association (KAPIDA).

Guided by Geoffrey Namukaye of the Uganda Development Services (UDS), I
penetrated KAPIDA's operation base several miles away from Kamuli town.
Beneficiaries of the organisation narrated in their native languages how
they use local means to reproduce chicken and treat themselves from
snakebites and injuries. The residents testified that lack of school fees
for their children had consequently become a thing of the past.

But the most single important achievement of KAPIDA is what one beneficiary
described as the end of diseases caused by poor sanitation. This arose out
of the organization's campaign that called for establishing toilets in most
homes.

Success is equally claimed by Kamuli District Women Association (KADIWODA).
Near the district headquarters stands their base. Accompanied by a youth
representative to KAPIDA, the chairperson of the association Monica Nayenga
embraced us with a wide smile when we arrived aboard a taxi motorbike. With
help from the Church, the organization has found sponsorship for 40 less
privileged children in good schools, she said.

A beneficiary narrated how KAPIDA had assisted rural women to establish
small income generating projects such as bakeries and chicken rearing.

KAPIDA and KADIWODA's stories seem to be related – the church plays a
critical role in both. Their challenges are likewise related – some members
of the public view the leaders of the associations as self-seekers.
